"Maintenance keeps things up, if maintenance is neglected, then eventually one will have to take a step back to fix them."

It's a realisation that comes when the maintenance is neglected: hygiene (oral, dental, general), water, healthy food, sleep... There's lots. While it is true that we always are not thinking about something, there's somethings that may or may not be better off as a habit.
